“tpc” (Revisited)

TPC

Is an homage to transgression and unpopular empowerment; a revision of violence; an imagination of persecution transmuted to power. TPC reaches back to 1998 to tribute a black cinema cult classic, The Player’s Club. This film has long been a favorite of mine, but I think of it differently these days—particularly in light of increased efforts to police women’s bodies. It now registers as an important fantasy of women’s efforts to police patriarchy. How do we imagine the “stripper,” the woman who dares to walk the world undecorated in the unnecessary accouterments of other people’s frigid anti-human discomfort with skin & sex? How do we appropriately hear her voice or understand her politics? Moreover, what is it that drives the industry & men’s need to participate in the “purchase” of a woman’s time, attention, and by delusional assumption, her person. Woven together in the entire tableau is a reciprocally circulating quest for power—a quite complex relationship that always leaves us wondering, who is actually the power broker. TPC poetically and musically reimagines the characters of the film in effort to mine it and their psychological infrastructure. It indicts capitalism and attempts to restore power where it belongs, to the bodies men dream of buying. But those bodies have dreams of their own. Those bodies are shooting stars that launch up rather than down. I hope you like what you hear.

Will you dance for me some times

CHOCOLATE COVERED BUTTERFLIES (BLUE)

(by Tariq Saint-Sankofa)

VERSE1:

A Butterfly with wings like lace

Softly landed on you face

Made me want to touch your skin

Wish that we were more than friends

I been praying to the moon at night

Pray that I’ll be what you like

I been sitting myself in the sun

So I can see if you are the one

CHORUS:

I want  chocolate covered butterflies

Landing on my lips tonight

I want  chocolate covered butterflies

Landing on my lips tonight

VERSE 2:

Kismet told me lips align

Cosmic kisses intertwined

From the time you entered in my mind

I’ve been trying to find the perfect line

To capture all your butterflies

Touch your skin and make you mine

I’m willing just to be your friend

But I don’t think that’s how it ends

CHORUS:

I want  chocolate covered butterflies

Landing on my lips tonight

I want  chocolate covered butterflies

Landing on my lips tonight

SHOOTING STAR (DIAMOND)

(by Tariq Saint-Sankofa)

CHORUS:

she’s a shooting star / she ain’t afraid of god

and why should she be?

she’s a shooting star / she ain’t afraid of god

and why should she be?

VERSE 1:

She’s a shooting star / Ruger 45 fitted

she always hits the mark / in manipulating minutes

she’s teaching old dogs new tricks

& tucking dicks

back in their sheaths

cuz she goes home alone, alone

She plays the game / but ain’t the same

she’s made to burn the sky

the stars fall / when earth calls

but unlike her they die

CHORUS:

she’s a shooting star / she ain’t afraid of god

and why should she be?

she’s a shooting star / she ain’t afraid of god

and why should she be?

VERSE:

she’s a shooting star falling up / in reverse

she keep her head too high / no distraction from the work

she got a big dream to feed

some promises to keep

and she can’t back down

she’s come to far / to lose heart

it comes with her next breath

so stars fall / but not all

she gave her fears to death

CHORUS:

she’s a shooting star / she ain’t afraid of god

and why should she be?

she’s a shooting star / she ain’t afraid of god

and why should she be?

VAMP:

don’t fall down stay deep in your sky

keep floatin, baby, don’t you let em’ steal your high

supanova gonna show em’ what it’s like to fly

don’t fall down stay deep in your sky

don’t fall down stay deep in your sky

keep floatin, baby, don’t you let em’ steal your high

supanova gonna show em’ what it’s like to fly

don’t fall down stay deep in your sky
